Creative Bokeh
Bokeh (pronounced Bo-Kah) is the blurry effect on out of focus areas of an image caused by having a shallow Depth of Field. Often this is a desired effect as it helps to make the subject stand out. To achieve this effect the aperture needs to be as large as possible.
When photographing dark scenes with lights. Out of focus highlights usually appear as circular as this is the shape of our aperture.
We can modifying the shape of Bokeh in images by placing a shape filter in front of our lens. - see right ->
This has the unexpected effect as seen in the images below. Tips:
Create your own cutout filter using a piece of card. Ensure that the background of the image is out of focus. Use as large an aperture as possible. Use a large focal length (zoom in). |
