Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds is a basic design principle that can be applied to photographs to help improve your composition. To use the rule of thirds you need to imagine a grid over your image as you compose it. The grid should split the image into three equal parts horizontally and/or vertically. These imaginary lines can be used to decided where to place important parts of your image.
For example when composing a landscape the horizon in most cases would look better on either the top or bottom third.
